An independent literacy assessment creates a clear picture of what your child's learning profile is, what is holding their progress and what needs to be done to help them succeed and be confident with literacy. The reading and spelling assessments are normed on Australian kids, so you will see where they are sitting compared to their peers.

We identify:
  • Any knowledge gaps that are holding them back.
  • Their developmental stage of phonological & phonemic awareness (essential pre-reading skills).
  • Which letter to sound knowledge they need to develop.
  • Reading ability compared to same-age group.
  • Spelling ability compared to same-age group.

What you get from this appointment:

  • A variety of evidence-backed independent assessments to tell you where your child is at compared to other kids their age in Australia based on age and grade.
  • 4-5 page comprehensive report detailing, analysing and explaining the results in easy to understand language. Perfect to share with teachers or other professionals.
  • Recommended learning plan including goals and areas of remediation to get going with bringing up skill levels.
  • The option to discuss the results further so that you're clear about where your child is at with their learning and what needs to happen next to help them flourish with literacy.
  • Non-refundable deposit is required upon booking.
  • Total cost for assessment session & report: AU$380

HOW ONLINE ASSESSMENTS WORK

Unless you're in Brisbane, Queensland, our Functional Literacy Assessments are completed entirely online, making it easier for families across Australia to access high-quality, evidence-based literacy support, no matter where you live.

Online assessments work in exactly the same was as if your child was sitting opposite us.

Here’s how it works:

🖥️ What You’ll Need
At your child’s scheduled session time, you’ll receive a link to join via video call.
It works best if your child uses a laptop, as we can tilt the screen slightly ("dip the lid") to give a clear view of their desk space, just like we would if we were sitting across from each other.
An iPad or desktop computer also works well if a laptop isn’t available.

📶 Set Up for Success
To get the most out of the session:

  • Make sure you have a strong internet connection

  • Set your child up in a quiet space with no distractions

  • You don’t need to be in the session with your child, but it’s handy to be nearby in case of any tech hiccups

✍️ What to Bring
For the spelling section, it’s great if your child has a whiteboard and whiteboard markers (you can grab these from the supermarket). But if not, paper and textas work just fine too.

👩‍🏫 What Happens in the Assessment
The session runs just like it would in person. It’s one-on-one and interactive, giving us a full picture of your child’s current reading, spelling, and writing skills using normed, structured assessments.
